Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593) was a foundational Elizabethan poet and playwright, often considered Shakespeare’s most significant predecessor. Famous for establishing blank verse as the standard for drama, his work includes Doctor Faustus and Tamburlaine. Known for his “overreaching” protagonists, he lived a dangerous, short life as an accused spy and radical thinker before his violent death at 29.
